Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Ghana, David Asante Appeatu, has declared war against political vigilantism that has infused  Ghana’s body politics jeopardizing its security.

Mr. David Asante Appeatu, who is currently in Kumasi with a special anti-terrorist squad has warned troublemakers riding on the back of political vigilante groups to turn a new leave instantly.

The Inspector General of Police’s presence in  Kumasi is as a result of some members of the pro New Patriotic Party vigilante group Delta Force who stormed a Circuit Court in Kumasi to free 13 of its members who were facing charges for assaulting the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator a few weeks ago.

Speaking in a press conference today April 8, 2017, IGP David Asante Appeatu  declared war on vigilantism and also cautioned citizens who have formed various political vigilante groups to cause violence to halt their actions as Police will deploy all available force to abolish such groups.

“The Police service hereby declares a war on the act of vigilantism and all forms of mass disorder and disturbances, we shall employ all legitimate means available to us including dialogue, enforcement and enactment of laws… We shall clamp down on it [vigilantism] with all the force we can marshal,”

Mr. David Asante Appeatu added that; “This isolated incident by a group  who refer to itself as Delta Force in Kumasi is alien to our culture and criminal. As a law enforcement agency, we are going to pursue our goal of bringing this phenomenon of vigilantism to an end”

He also advised persons who may be aggrieved for whatever situation to resort to due process to have their grievances addressed and not to adopt violence.
