Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo has said the inflation of government contracts on road projects is a very worrying trend in the country.
He said aside from the poor quality of construction and rehabilitation works, the behavior is negatively affecting the country's source of funding.
According to him, there was a need for critical evaluation and to demand value for money when it comes to road contracts.

He said regardless of the type of road being constructed, the cost should conform with international standards.
“The cost of construction of roads should conform to international standards. We have a situation where the cost per kilometre of our road network is higher than international standards even when you work out the material aspect. This calls for a very close look at the matter. It cannot be and it should not be and therefore I’m appealing to our financial partners who will join us in the PPP that we are interested in having value for money,†he said at a forum on the Tema- Motorway road expansion.Â
Mr Osafo Marfo said the situation was worrying because of long-term funding options in the road sector.
He said the road expansion project is government top priority with all necessary arrangements secured to ensure it was completed on time.
He said road construction is crucial to the government in its drive towards accelerating Ghana's social and economic development.
