The Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, has criticised the delay by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to respond to victims of the Ketu South tidal waves.

Over 15 communities in the Anloga District and Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region were hit by tidal waves on Sunday dawn.

The NADMO on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, presented relief items to victims whose homes have been flooded by rising seawater.

According to Builsa South MP, "it was quite troubling for NADMO to take a number of days to respond."

He attributed the delayed response by NADMO to the poor governance in the country.

"It is the responsibility of government to ensure that adequate resources are assigned to NADMO. Should it have taken that long if we truly have an effective and capable NADMO properly resourced? Should it even take a day for relief items to be given to the people affected?"

Dr Clement Apaak blamed state institutions for neglecting their roles in protecting the environment from climate change.

"State institutions which are supposed to protect the physical environment are sitting by and allowing this to happen and these are the consequences, sand winning, illegal logging of Rosewood and destruction of river bodies through galamsey. All of these affect the weather pattern", he said on TV3 New Day.

He has urged the government to consider the cultural identity and economic ties of the natives of Ketu South when relocation becomes an option.

Meanwhile, Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has assured of budgetary allocation for the completion of the Keta sea defence wall project.
