Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has suspended all activities in connection with the 2021 SRC elections until further notice.

The university explains in a statement issued on Sunday that the decision follows a clash between supporters of two aspirants believed to be affiliates of University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti).

“Investigations so far reveal that the vetting, which was held on Saturday, 3 July 2021 at the Great Hall, proceeded smoothly until it got to the aspirants for the SRC presidential slot when the clash occurred.

“One student is officially known to have sustained a minor injury in his palm from a broken bottle and is undergoing treatment at the KNUST Hospital. Some chairs, flowerpots and glass doors at the Great Hall were also damaged,” the statement signed by Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe, Deputy Registrar, said.

Meanwhile, security officers made up of personnel of the Ghana Police Service and the university’s security have restored calm on campus.

KNUST said in the statement that a committee will be constituted to investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations.

“Management wishes to assure all parents, and stakeholders of the University that there is absolute calm and students are going about their normal activities peacefully.

“The University will continue to provide a safe and secure environment for productive academic work,” the statement assured.
