A devastating fire broke out, on Monday dawn wreaking havoc on over 180 shops at the Kumasi Central Market.

The flames which ignited at 1 am, rapidly swept through a section of the Racecourse Market where Millers and traders of foodstuffs and ingredients operated resulting in the loss of goods worth hundreds of cedis.

Over twenty milling machines were destroyed in the blaze.

Firefighters called to the scene were initially prevented by some traders from attending to the disaster.

The angry traders hurled stones and other crude weapons at the firefighters, leading to one of the firemen being injured.

The suspects accused the fire service personnel of delayed response, prompting them to retaliate by pelting stones.

Meanwhile, Police in the Ashanti Region have apprehended five individuals in connection with an alleged assault on fire officers.
