Meningitis outbreak: One dead 60 under surveillance at Asamankese SHS

A student of Asamankese SHS in the Eastern region has died of meningitis on campus while 60 others who came in contact with the deceased student are under surveillance.

The death of Eric Boateng, 17, on Wednesday, December 20 has brought the number of deaths recorded in second cycle institutions due to the outbreak of meningitis to five.

The Eastern regional disease control officer Sali Manuel said as part of public health measures both students and family members who came into contact with the deceased are been profiled and will be monitored for the minimum of five days.

According to him, laboratory test of fluids from the body of the student confirmed meningitis but he died before he could be treated for the disease.

The outbreak of meningitis have been recorded in many Senior High Schools in the country, Koforidua SHS Damango SHS in the Northern Region, Bawku Secondary Technical, Tempane SHS, and Zuarungu, all in the Upper East Region have also recorded deaths due to the outbreak.
