A coastal researcher has advised fishermen and residents in low lying coastal areas of the Central and Volta Regions, to move away from their communities in the coming days, due to predicted surge in tidal waves.
Nana Kuma Mintah says the forecasts indicate some areas could be hit by waves as high as 2.5 metres with a wave period of over 16 seconds.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, He said the situation would not be safe for fishing activities, people in the communities should therefore move to higher ground to prevent possible casualties.
Some low lying area in the Cape Coast, Saltpond and Ankaful were on Sunday hit by tiday waves, destroying millions of cedis worth of property. A rescue mission is currently underway in Cape Coast to find a missing fishermen swept away by the tide.
At Blekusu in the Ketu South District of the Volta Region, schools remain closed Monday morning after classrooms, churches and homes were submerged.
Reports from JoyNews say nearly 250 houses are under water, displacing over 1,500 people. Residents are pleading with government to relocate them.
