A notorious Nigerian kidnapper, Chikwudubem Onwuamadike arrested two weeks ago in Nigeria has a Ghanaian passport, property and family in Ghana.
That’s according to the Inspector General of Police for Nigeria, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris.
Addressing the on-going West Africa National Security Conference in Accra, the police chief said the kidnapper popularly referred to as Evans, has confessed to being a former drug trafficker and charging his ransom in dollars.
Footage of Evans being arrested by the Nigerian police went viral on the internet last week. The arrest ended a long hard search for him.
Evans is behind a kidnapping ring known to keep victims for up to six months until a ransom demand is fully settled. In some instances, he has allowed families of the victims to pay in installments, only releasing the kidnapped after the total amount is settled. He has reportedly secured as much as a million dollars in one case alone.
IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris lauded the sharing of actionable intelligence within the Nigerian police, for the apprehension of Evans and expressed the hope that the police in the West African sub region would coordinate efforts to deal with cross boarder crimes.
He asked the Ghana Police Service to investigate how the kidnapper acquired the Ghanaian passport and also if he is linked to any incidence of kidnapping in Ghana
