The National Science and Math Quiz [NSMQ] has exposed the unpracticality of our educational system which is more focused on the theory aspect of learning. That’s according to the quiz mistress of the NSMQ, Dr. Elsie Effah Kauffman, who through the quiz session has identified that most of the contestant are good in recollecting the concept but finds it difficult to put it to practise. She believes it is a contributory factor to the low marks scored by the schools at the problem of the day session of the NSMQ.
The NSMQ ended on the 29th of June with Prempeh College emerging winners after thrashing St. Thomas Aquinas and Adisadel College. Problem of the day gives 10 minutes for students to solve a maths question on stage, detailing every process used in arriving at the answer. Some schools at the finals scored as low at 1 out of the 10 points at stake.

Speaking inn an interview on Accra based CitiFM, Dr. Kauffman called on teachers at the various second cycle institutions to make the study of science and math more practical, as that is the only way their students can survive in the outside world. She stressed application is the predominant aspect of work, "without it we will still be at the same place."
