The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has inaugurated a five-member committee to assess and improve the Axle Load Control Program in Ghana.
This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in regulating axle load operations to ensure safer roads.
The committee comprises representatives from National Security, Private Haulage Operators, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ghana Standards Authority.
Their mandate includes identifying systemic and operational challenges, evaluating regulatory violations, reviewing fine management, and recommending necessary reforms.
Overloading of heavy cargo vehicles has been identified as a leading cause of road deterioration and increased traffic accidents.
To address this, the Ministry is working to reform the Axle Load Control Program, which has faced significant operational challenges.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to road safety, stressing that mitigating overloading is crucial for preserving road infrastructure and ensuring sustainable transport development.
