The SOS Children’s Village (CV) in Tamale has stepped up efforts to sensitize communities in the Northern Region on the dangers of child labour.
This is in line with the organization’s Family Strengthening Programme (FSP) that supports children who stand the risk of losing parental care in the communities.
The programme, an initiative of the FSP unit of SOS CV Tamale is one of the core components of engaging the local communities as a pre-emptive method to secure the future of these underprivileged children.
The focus is to educate, enlighten and sensitize the community members on the negative effects of their actions on the growth and future development of the child.
Speaking at one of the sensitization workshops in the Datoyili community, Tamale FSP Coordinator, Joseph Agoona, said “the Datoyili community was specifically chosen for its peculiar nature in engaging children in farming during the rainy season at the expense of their education. This has contributed significantly to low school attendance during this period and consequently impacted negatively on the education of the childrenâ€.
The programme educated parents, caregivers and the community members on how their actions constituted child labour and the negative effects it had on the growth of their children. He encouraged parents, care givers and the community members to take the education of their children seriously as it builds their capacity for the future.
Assemblyman for the Datoyili electoral area Abu Haruna pledged the local Assembly’s commitment to working with SOS CV to end the recurrent cases of child labour in the community.
