The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has declared an indefinite suspension of emergency and outpatient services, effective immediately.

This decision follows an emergency meeting held on April 23, 2025, in response to longstanding operational challenges and a recent altercation involving the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and a senior doctor at the facility.

The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) in a statement issued on Wednesday, April 23, demands unqualified apologies from the Minister and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North Constituency, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa and all doctors and staff of the Accident and Emergency department.

The DATTH statement emphasized that “with immediate effect, all members of DATTH have proceeded on an indefinite suspension of all emergency and outpatient services.”

The doctors have also outlined several demands, including the provision of essential medical equipment and supplies, such as constant water and electricity supply, oxygen, and consumable items like gloves and syringes.

“We shall resume provision of emergency and outpatient services after we receive appropriate apologies,” the statement read.

Additionally, the doctors are demanding medium-term provisions, including an MRI scan machine, CT scan machine, mammography machine, and other essential equipment to facilitate their work.

The strike follows a visit by the Minister of Health to the hospital on April 22, 2025, which the doctors claim was misreported by some media houses.

DATTH has demanded apologies from these media houses for “false and biased reportage” of the incident.

Until these demands are met, the doctors have vowed to continue their strike action.
