A devastating tidal wave disaster has left residents of Agavedzi in distress, with at least 51 houses destroyed and over 300 individuals displaced, according to the Assembly Member for the Agavedzi Electoral Area, Ebenezer Assah.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, March 2, Assah described the dire situation, revealing that even the community cemetery had been affected.

“About 51 houses have been destroyed so far, 300 plus individuals displaced… the sea has taken about 63 tombs so far, and the remaining bodies that we were able to retrieve have been transferred to other cemeteries,” he said.

He warned that without the continuation of the sea defense project, more cemeteries and properties could be lost.

Assah further highlighted the community’s vulnerability, noting that residents now depend on the major road connecting Aflao and Anloga.

“We are hoping that if nothing is done to stop the ravages of the tidal waves, it won’t take away the only hope we have – our major road,” he stressed.

He called on the government and relevant authorities to intervene urgently to prevent further destruction and displacement.

Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has declared a ‘state of emergency’ following extensive coastal erosion along the southern Volta.

High tides have continued to wash away communities in the Ketu South Municipality over the past seven days.

Gunu described the situation as a threat to national security and called for emergency interventions to curb the destruction and ensure the safety of affected residents.
