Ghana’s 9th Parliament has taken shape with the election of Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and two new Deputy Speakers.

The positions of 1st and 2nd Deputy Speakers have been filled by Bernard Ahiafor and Andrew Amoako Asiamah, respectively.

Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, brings his extensive experience as a lawmaker from the Volta Region to the role.

His nomination was put forward by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader.

As a practicing lawyer, he brings expertise in legal matters, having served on key parliamentary committees like the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.

Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Member of Parliament for Fomena, has been re-elected as the 2nd Deputy Speaker, a position he’s held since January 2021.

Many had anticipated that the NDC members of parliament with their supermajority would push for an independent candidate to occupy the 2nd Deputy Speaker role.

However, in a move that suggests consensus-building efforts, Andrew Asiamah Amoako of the NPP was re-elected to the position.

The Constitution’s stipulation that the two Deputy Speakers cannot be from the same political party likely influenced this decision, promoting balance and representation in Parliament’s leadership.
