Constituents of Assin North will today, June 27 vote to elect a new Member of Parliament.

The by-election follows the Supreme Court ordering Parliament to expunge the name of James Gyakye Quayson from its records as a Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency in the Central Region.

A seven-member panel presided over by Justice Jones Dotse in a unanimous decision on May 17, 2023, ruled that the Electoral Commission acted unconstitutionally in allowing him (Quayson) to contest the 2020 Parliamentary Election without proof of him renouncing his Canadian Citizenship.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed its readiness to conduct today's Assin North by-election in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

In all, about 41,168 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in 99 election centres.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Charles Opoku, is number one on the ballot paper, with the Liberal Party of Ghana’s (LPG) candidate, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, occupying the second position on the ballot and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, on number three.

Also, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that sufficient measures have been put in place to maintain law and order as well as ensure peace and security before, during and after the by-election.

The IGP further urged the public to be circumspect in the reportage on the election and avoid circulating false information that has the likelihood to occasion a breach of peace.
