Former president John Dramani Mahama has urged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to relent or despair because the party will “bounce back” soon.

In a tweet, Mahama sought to answer the question of why the party lost in the last election, saying that the reasons for the defeat were multifaceted.

He urged party members and supporters to be calm and work to strengthen its base for victory in 2020.

“The NDC will bounce back!! Cause of our loss is multifaceted. We need calm nerves & hard work to strengthen the base of the party.  #JMLegacy.”

John Mahama failed in his bid to remain president for another four years in December 2016.

He was defeated by the New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo, who had unsuccessfully contested to be president on two previous occasions.

Nana Akufo-Addo secured 53 per cent of valid votes cast while Mahaha got 44 percent.

The defeat ensued that Mahama became the first sitting president to fail in a second term bid.

His message of assurance to the NDC comes as Akufo-Addo faces criticism from Ghanaians for appointing 110 ministers to serve in his government.

The president has faced criticism from ordinary Ghanaians, civil society activists and members of the opposition for the move, which some say amounts to a waste of public funds.

Akufo-Addo has, however, insisted that he needs all the 110 ministers to help him achieve his vision of transforming Ghana into a modern industrial economy.
