The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) led by George Weah has retained lead as the second batch of provisional results of presidential elections in Liberia were released yesterday.

According to figures read out by the Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), the former Chelsea footballer remained ahead with 39 percent of the valid votes as 72 year Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party lags at 31.1 percent of the votes.

Mr Jerome Korkoya of the NEC on Friday's briefing declared results from 1,817 polling stations out of the 5,390 in the country.

“Starting with Mr George Weah of the CDC, of the total number of places we have processed, he has obtained 240,750 votes; that would represent 39.6 percent. He would be followed by Mr Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party. He has obtained 160,975 votes, and that would represent 31.1 percent.”

He added that “A total of 547,965 votes have been processed from the polling places we just mentioned, and that would represent 74.58 percent of the total number of voters registered in those poll places.

As the trend continues, the possibility of a run-off might be practically unavoidable.
In the case of a run-off, the battle between the two ‘political enemies’ would be for the votes garnered by the other 18 anguishing candidates before the winner be it George Weah or Joseph N. Boakai can successfully be called onto the ‘table of men’.

Joseph N. Boakai 72 has chosen the current Speaker of the House of Representative, James Emmanuel Nuquay 49 as his running mate whiles George Weah, 51, has chosen Charles Taylor's ex-wife Jewel Howard Taylor who is currently a senior Senator from Bong County.
