The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has imposed a GH¢5,000 fine on Accra Lions following controversial remarks made by the club on social media after their 1-0 defeat to Dreams FC in a Ghana Premier League match.
In their post, the Lions suggested that external factors had unfairly influenced the result, a claim that the GFA deemed damaging to the integrity of the game.
The post also criticized the performance of referee Maxwell Hanson and raised broader concerns about the state of Ghanaian football, actions the GFA considered bringing the sport into disrepute.
In addition to the fine, the GFA issued a stern warning to Accra Lions, cautioning them to avoid similar conduct in the future or face further sanctions. The GFA cited the violation of Section 34(6)(d) of the GFA Premier League Regulations, 2019, for the inappropriate behavior.
The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee confirmed the sanction, stating, “Accra Lions FC have been handed a GH¢5,000 fine and a warning for misconduct following their Ghana Premier League game against Dreams FC. The club was found guilty of making improper social media comments about match officials, which brought the game into disrepute.”
In a related matter, Debibi United FC, a Division One League club, was fined GH¢4,000 for the inappropriate behavior of their supporters, along with a warning.
