The Minority in Parliament is calling on Ghana’s security agencies to urgently investigate the latest wave of violence in the Bawku enclave, following a deadly confrontation between security forces and local youth on Thursday, April 10.

The clashes reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. In a further escalation of tensions, the private residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, was allegedly set ablaze during the unrest.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, the MP for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, voiced grave concerns over the recurring instability in Bawku and emphasized the need for immediate intervention to prevent further bloodshed.

“On the curfew that has been tightened, we’re urging all security agencies to immediately investigate the causes of the escalation and take urgent steps to address the situation,” Rev. Fordjour stated.

The Minority stressed the importance of professionalism, restraint, and sensitivity by security personnel operating in the volatile region. They also advocated for a more holistic and inclusive strategy aimed at restoring peace and resolving the underlying issues that have plagued the area for years.

“In approaching matters in the Bawku enclave, security forces must act with absolute professionalism, circumspection, fairness, but also firmness – in a diplomatic way that respects the cultural and emotional sensitivities of the conflict,” he added.

The Minority’s call comes amid growing concerns about the long-standing chieftaincy and ethnic tensions in Bawku, which have led to repeated outbreaks of violence, loss of lives, and destruction of property.

They reiterated their commitment to supporting any efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace in Bawku and urged the government to intensify peacebuilding and dialogue initiatives.
