The leadership of the People’s National Convention (PNC) is expected to meet for the consideration of possible sanctions against the flagbearer for taking up an ambassadorial appointment without consulting the party.

Dr. Edward Mahama was part of 22 people sworn into office as ambassadors by President Akufo-Addo on Monday, June 10.

Speaking on JoyFM, General Secretary, Atik Mohammed, said the acceptance of the position by the flagbearer without recourse to the executives is against the party regulations. He accused the flagbearer of being a part of an orchestration by the government to cripple the PNC as a political party by corrupting its leadership.

Chairman of the party Bernard Mornah has also said the appointment places the PNC in a critical position, limiting its ability to criticize the policies of the government. According to him, the National Executive Committee [NEC]  will be meeting shortly. Dr. Mahama would be invited to explain his actions and if need be, he would be sanctioned in accordance with the constitution of the PNC.

Meanwhile the Ambassador-at-Large, Dr. Mahama has defended his actions saying the portfolio is an opportunity for him to serve God and country. He is willing to meet the standing committee which is in charge of the day to day running of the party to explain his move.
