Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Dafeamekpor, has accused Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of creating the impression that digitalisation started during the tenure of this government.

He stated that the current digitalisation drive that is being undertaken in the country was started in 2008 and was implemented by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration after former President John Kufuor left office.

"This began from somewhere and the parent plant underpinning all this is the Electronic Transactions Act that was passed on December 19, 2008. A couple of weeks later President Kufuor left office so the implementation of that law happened under the NDC,” the South Dayi lawmaker said.

He stated that the digitilaisation project had been initiated by previous governments and that the NDC is responsible for digitalising a number of agencies and projects in the country.

"We [NDC] digitalised the Judiciary and that project goes way back into the middle of the 1990s. You recall why Victor Selormey was jailed? He was jailed for the court computerisation project and the project was meant to make the Judiciary digital. So way back, this project had been initiated by different governments. Under the NDC, I recall the launch of the Eastern Corridor Fibre Optic cable which of course will open up data transfer between us and the people of Burkina,” he said.

Rockson Dafeamekpor said if the current government is building on the platforms and projects started by previous governments, it is a good thing but they shouldn’t let people believe that these are new things they are creating.

He made these comments during a political discussion on Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday, November 3, 2021.
