Football, the world over, is played for a purpose - goals. Players who score are hailed by all and those who fail to score, especially strikers, are seen as inefficient.

In view of this, PrimeNewsGhana's Duah Michael takes a look at the Ghana Premier League top scorers since 2005 and where they are now:

Prince Tagoe - 2005/2006 (Hearts Of Oak)Image result for prince tagoe hearts of oak 2005Prince Tagoe, Ghana’s only prince of goals. The 32-year-old was the top scorer in the Ghana Premier League in 2005 as a player of Accra Hearts of Oak.

The player after his win has had spells with Al Ittihad, Al Shabab, Ettifaq, 1899 Hoffenheim, Partizan Belgrade, Bursaspor, Ettifaq, Club Africain, Kelantan FA, and Hapoel Bnei Lod and currently play for Turkish side Isparta Davrazspor.
 

Emmanuel Clottey - 2006/2007 (Great Olympics)Image result for Emmanuel ClotteyEmmanuel Atukwei Clottey was a player for Great Olympics when he finished as the top scorer in the Ghana Premier League for the 2006/2007 season.

The player who began his career with a Brazil Academy before his time at Olympics had short loan spells abroad before returning home to play for Tema Youth and Berekum Chelsea.

Emmanuel Clottey made another transfer move away from Ghana to Esperance de Tunis from 2012 to 2015. He was loaned to Al Dhafra during his time at Esperance.

Clottey had a short stint with Asante Kotoko before his contract was terminated.

Eric Kwabena Bekoe- 2007/2008 (Asante Kotoko)Image result for eric bekoeBekoe became the goal king in Ghana during the 2007/2008 Ghanaian premiere league after scoring 17 goals in 23 appearances for Asante Kotoko.

Due to his great performance, Bekoe landed a great deal with the Egyptian based football club Petrojet.

He joined Petrojet after missing to join Zamalek. He, later on, returned to Ghana where he played for Berekum Chelsea. He also played for Sekondi Hassaacas where he was part of the team during the 2016 Ghana premier league season before moving to AFC Leopards of Kenya. He is currently unattached.

Alex Asamoah - 2008/2009 (Asante Kotoko)Related imageAlex Asamoah won the 2008/2009 Ghana Premier League top scorer award with 17 goals for Asante Kotoko. The player continued for the Kumasi-based club before moving to South Korean K-League team Gyeongnam FC on loan on March 17, 2010.

Asamoah joined ES Setif the following year before returning to Ghana to play for Ashgold. Alex Asamoah had a short spell with Ashgold making 16 appearances during his time before transferring to Aduana Stars and currently plays for Techiman Eleven Wonders in the Ghana Premier League.

Samuel Affum and Bismark Idan - 2009/2010 (Hearts of Oak, Kessben FC/Medeama SC)Image result for Samuel Affum heartsSamuel Afum and Bismark Idan shared the golden boot award in the 2009/2010 Ghana Premier League season with 13 goals apiece.

Afum who was then a Hearts of Oak player has gone on to play three years for Arabian club Smouha Sporting Club before joining Swiss team Young Boys. The player is now with Finish side FC Ilves.

Idan after becoming the top scorer with Ghanaian club Kessben FC now Medeama SC moved to Berekum Chelsea before going abroad to play for Turkish club Goztepe SK.

Bismark Idan returned to Berekum Chelsea and in 2014 and was transferred to New Edubbiase United. The player is now a free agent after ending his contract with Al Khartoum.

Nana Poku - 2010/2011 (Berekum Arsenal)Related imageNana Poku’s goalscoring prowess with Berekum Arsenal landed him a three-year deal with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

The 2010/2011 Ghana Premier League top scorer with 14 goals at Berekum Arsenal moved to Ittihad El Shorta after three years with Sheva before making a move to Misr El-Makasa before crossing carpet to Qatari side Al-Wakrah where he currently plays.

Emmanuel Baffour - 2011/2012 (New Edubiase United)Image result for Emmanuel BaffourEmmanuel Awuah Baffour is currently MIA with respect to his football career after his deal with South African Premier League team Mamelodi Sundowns ended with him playing for Ashgold seasons ago.

The former Liberty Professionals, Tema Youth and New Edubiase United striker was the top scorer for the for the 2011/2012 Ghana Premier League season scoring 21 goals for New Edubiase and he currently plys his trade in Lebanon with Al-Ijtimai Tripoli.

Mahatma Ottoo- 2012/2013 (Hearts of Oak)Image result for Mahatma OtooMahatma Ottoo has not played in Ghana since his days with Ghana Premier League team Accra Hearts of Oak from 2009 to 2013 where he was named the ‘Goal King’ for the 2012/2013 season after he raked 20 goals for the capital club.

The player had a loan spell at ES Tunis during his time at Hearts of Oak before joining Norwegian football club Sogndal. Ottoo now plays in the Turkish second-tier side Balıkesirspor.

Augustine Okrah - 2013/2014 (Bechem United)Image result for Augustine Okrah, bechem unitedAugustine Okrah won the top scorer accolade with Ghana Premier League team Bechem United in the 2013/2014 season. The player scored 16 goals to top the charts.

The 25-year-old Ghanaian footballer joined BK Hacken on loan from Bechem United before moving to join Sudan's Al Marriekh. Okrah currently plays for Indian Super League side, NorthEast United.

Kofi Owusu - 2014/2015 (Berekum Chelsea)Image result for Kofi Owusu berekum chelseaKofi Owusu was crowned the top scorer in Ghana’s top flight football. Owusu scored 19 goals for Berekum Chelsea in the 2014/2015 season to win the golden boot.

The former Aduana Stars and King Faisal forward joined Egyptian club Aswan FC before coming back to join AshantiGold in 2016 before the Obuasi based side released. He has gone MIA since.

Latif Blessing- 2015/2016 (Liberty Professionals)Image result for latif blessingLatif Blessing won the top scorer’s award with 17 goals for Liberty Professionals in the 2015/2016 league season. 

In January 2017, Blessing signed with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer in the United States from Liberty and currently plays for another MLS side Los Angeles FC.

Hans Kwofie- 2016/2017 (AshantiGold)Related image

Hans scored 17 goals while playing for Ashanti Gold during the 2017 Ghana premier league. Hans Kwofie has gone down in history as the first player in the Ghana premier league to score a hattrick and a quadruple in a single season. He joined Egyptian side Smouha from the Obuasi based club before making a switch to Singida United FC in Tanzania. Hans currently plays for Omani side Al Orouba Sports Club.

The Ghana Premier League has been halted since June 2018 after the Anas Expose on football corruption in the country.
