The Maiden McDan Junior Tennis Open Championship has been launched on Wednesday and scheduled to run between August 21-26 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The competition which is aimed at unearthing talents for the country would feature children between the ages of 12 and 16.
Speaking at the launch, President of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Isaac Aboagye Duah expressed appreciation to McDan for bringing back the competition for children.
According to the President, the competition was held 10 years ago but collapsed due to lack of funding and interest from corporate entities.
“The competition would help nurture talents that would be representing Ghana in the upcoming Junior Championships,†he stated.
Children to participate in the competition he said, would come from across the country including, Winneba, Kumasi and Ashiaman.
Mr Aboagye Duah explained that there will be contests in male and female categories for Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 categories. Prizes available for the participants include tennis equipment as well as educational scholarships.
Head of Sales and Marketing at McDan, Obodai Sai said the event follows a promise made by Chief Executive Officer of McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley to organise a junior tennis competition before the end of the year.
He said the outfit is looking forward to an exciting competition as they are committed to developing the sport in the country.
He added that “the country needs a good foundation and this is exactly what McDan is doing in the development and promotion of tennis in Ghana.â€
He is optimistic that, with this ongoing initiative, Ghanaians would be among the top players in the world rankings in future.
The event is supported by Twellium Ghana Limited, producers of Rush Energy Drink and Planet range of soft drinks.
