Richard Commey is confident that he can cause an upset when he takes on Vasiliy Lomachenko this weekend.

The former lightweight champions will face each other in a 12-round lightweight contest on Saturday, December 11 at Madison Square Garden.

The former IBF champion, Commey acknowledges that he is facing 'a big challenge' and will need to put up a show against Lomachenko if he is to set up another world title shot next year.

"I have got the whole of my country behind me, I know it's not an easy fight. I believe I have done all the work I have to do and hope to put up a great show on the night," the Ghanaian boxer said.

Commey and Lomachenko both lost their title to Teofimo Lopez in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

In a December 2019 bout at the Madison Square Garden, Lopez scored a second-round TKO of Commey to win the only 135-pound title Lomachenko did not hold.

Lomachenko, the former three-division champion, lost his three 135-pound titles to Teofimo Lopez in October in a closely contested fight for the undisputed championship.

Reacting to the defeat ahead of the bout against Lomachenko, the Ghanaian boxer said he has recovered from the shock loss.

"Well I think losing in boxing is part of it. The most important thing about your loss is all about how you recover. Whatever happened with Lopez it is what it is in boxing and I take it as a man.

"I recovered and came back stronger and it is the reason why Lomachenko chose me,'' he added.
