Liberia: George Weah to run for president for second time

Former AC Milan player,  George Weah is set to contest for president of Liberia for a second time.

 

According to him,  he has the “vision” to transform the country.

He contested in 2005 after the ousting of Charles Taylor but lost in the second round run off to current President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who is supposed to step down in 2017 after the expiration of her second term.

Mr Weah who belongs to the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) party is currently the senator for the western province of Montserrado which includes Monronvia was the running mate of Winston Tubman in the 2011 polls.

During his successful playing career, he starred for teams including Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester City and is the only African footballer to ever win the FIFA World Player of the Year Award.

He at times in his career single-handedly financed the Liberian national team, the Lone Stars.

Announcing his presidential bid in Monrovia, he said he had been a “victim of poverty” like many of his supporters, and said he would boost vocational education, the BBC reported
