Bank of Ghana Governor steps down after one year in office

With just a few days to his first anniversary, Dr Abdul  Nashiru Issahaku has resigned as the Governor of Bank of Ghana.

According to news reports, he has tendered in his resignation letter and will leave his position at the start of next month.

Dr Issahaku, the reports add, cited personal reasons for his decision to step down.

He is the second Governor of Ghana's Central Bank to resign in the last year as his predecessor, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah also resigned in late March last year with about five months left on his tenure.

Dr. Issahaku, who was a second deputy to Dr Wampah was promoted by former President, John Mahama, becoming the 14th Governor of the bank since it was established in 1957 and has since been battling with rising inflation and a depreciating cedi.

He recently came under a lot of criticisms from some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) who believed that, having been appointed by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC), he was sabotaging the Akufo-Addo government by not putting in measures to arrest the depreciation of the cedi against its major trading currencies.

One of such NPP activist, First Vice Chairman for the Eastern Region, Alhaji Umar Bodinga went further to ask President Akufo-Addo to sack him because the circumstances of Dr Issahaku's appointment showed that he was to sabotage the NPP government.

“That is the reason why at the peak of the elections when NDC was about to leave power President Mahama brought Dr. Ishahaku to be governor of Bank of Ghana. The Cedi is depreciating because of the diabolic agenda of NDC member being the governor", Alhaji Bodinga said in an interview.
