President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Nana Akomea, the communications director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the managing director of the State Transport Company (STC).

Akomea takes over from Nuamah Donkor, who was appointed by former President John Dramani Mahama in 2014.

The former deputy minister for gender is set to begin work next week.

Akomea's appointment was revealed by Titus Glover, the deputy minister of transport, when he paid a working visit to STC on Monday to familiarise himself with the operations of the company.

Some unconfirmed reports say Akomea was not happy with his appointment as STC MD.

The reports say the NPP communications director considers the appointment to be a demotion.

He is said to have been expecting a ministerial appointment, in view of his contribution to Akufo-Addo's victory in the 2016 election.

Earlier in March, Akomea told his agitating supporters that Akufo-Addo had agreed to make him the CEO of a top state company.

“I have told the president the position I want to occupy and he has agreed. There are laid-down procedures for appointing a chief executive for that institution and so there is the need to follow the process so that the president will not violate the law.

“The president is going through the process. When he is done, he will make my appointment public”, he said at the time.

It is not clear if the STC appointment is the same job Akomea made reference to.
