Chairman of the Commission of Enquiry into the creation of the new regions has urged petitioners to be guided by the supreme interest of the country in their submissions.

Justice Stephen Brobbey says being the first time the provisions of article 5 of the 1992 constitution on the creation or alteration of a region has been invoked, everyone has a duty to ensure the cause is in the ultimate interest and benefit of the people of Ghana.

The Commission of Enquiry began hearing submissions from petitioners on the creation of six new regions Tuesday at the Osu Castle in Accra. Petitioners from the Western region presented the petition on the first day. Petitioners from the Volta region are presenting their case today and on Thursday, those from the Bono Ahafo region will appear before the commission.

The leader of the petitioners, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, Omanhene of Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area and President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, addressing the media shortly after the introductory session said that the formation of the Western North Region was strategic for good governance and economic development.

The petitioners who made a case for the creation of a new region in the Nothern part of the Volta region said for decades the area has been neglected, leading to widespread unemployment and extreme poverty among the people.

According to them, the region provides a substantial level of resources to the country's growth but receives very little back in terms of development. They believe the creation of the region will lead to the allocation of much-needed resources for the development of the area.

The creation of the new regions was a promise by President Nana Akufo-Addo to address the concerns of under development in some parts of the country.
