President John Mahama has signed a book of condolence in honour of Namibia’s first President, Sam Nujoma, who died on February 8, 2025 at aged of 95.

In a message shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, February 20, 2025, President Mahama paid tribute to Nujoma’s role in Africa’s liberation struggle.

“Liberation Comrade, you have truly fought a good fight, and now is the time for the faithful soldier to lay down his arm and take a rest,” he wrote.

“Namibia is truly grateful to you, and Africa is truly grateful to you for the dignity and freedom we enjoy as a people. Rest in peace, soldier, Sam Nujoma. Long live Africa and Namibia solidarity.”

Born on May 12, 1929, Nujoma was a central figure in Namibia’s fight against apartheid rule under South Africa.

He founded the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) in 1960 and led a protracted liberation struggle that culminated in Namibia’s independence in 1990.

He served as the country’s first president until 2005 and is regarded as the "Founding Father of the Namibian Nation."

President Mahama and Nujoma met on several occasions, particularly during African Union summits and state visits.

In 2013, Mahama visited Namibia, strengthening ties between the two countries and acknowledging Nujoma’s legacy.
