A controversial ban that seeks to stop tricycles from using the Accra-Tema motorway will take effect from today, Monday, November 1, 2021.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, who imposed the ban intends to end the hazards that these tricycles – which usually cart rubbish from the suburbs of Accra to landfill sites at Kpone – pose to other road users.

“Aside from them not having drivers’ licenses, the tricycles are not properly insured. They dump refuse anyhow in the middle of the road,” Mr Quartey said.

This means from today, tricycles plying the motorway would be impounded by a special task force set up to enforce the ban.

The ban is expected to spark controversy as the Minority in Parliament has described it as unlawful.

According to the Minister, the ban is part of his ‘Making Accra Work’ agenda and is the first of a series of initiatives that will come into full force by February 2022 to bring sanity to Accra’s roads.

Henry Quartey has said the ban is consistent with law and has called the bluff of the Minority.
