The Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat, Mustapha Ussif has stated that the insurance policy for NSS personnel is not compulsory.

His comments follow reports suggesting the secretariat is imposing the new insurance policy on personnel.
According to the insurance policy, an amount of ¢15.00 will be deducted from each of the over 91,000 personnel posted this year.

The policy which takes retrospective effect from September 1 this year, will make GH¢3,000 available to service persons who suffer accidents that will keep them from their duties.

Those who suffer permanent or temporary disability through accidents during the service year will also be entitled to GH¢15,000 insurance cover.

In addition, the next of kin of service persons who die while undertaking the mandatory national exercise will receive the same amount from GLICO Life.

During the launch of the policy, Mustapha Ussif said “As part of this comprehensive initiative, there is a special package for free inter MTN calls for service persons each month, GH¢5 recharge airtime from MTN to other networks every month, free browsing on social media, 500 free messages, 100 percent bonus on all MTN recharge made by service persons, as well as free viewing of a movie twice a year at Silver Star Cinema,”

However, immediate past NSS Boss, Kpesa Whyte on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen argued the new mandatory insurance scheme for service personnel as “daylight robbery.” Because personnel hardly die or fall sick whilst on service.

In a sharp rebuttal on the same FM station, Mustapha Ussif stated that the secretariat was not imposing the insurance scheme on the personnel. He added that he was presented a proposal by the NASPA Executive on 27th May 2017 in which they demanded from institutions of the Insurance Policy.

“If they have gone to their (NASPA) Congress and had brought a proposal that they want insurance package, who am to say no…am very surprised that Dr Kpesa Whyte who is an immediate NSS Boss would be making such claim,” he said.

He emphatically debunked claims that the new policy is a way to pay NPP affiliated insurance company.

“The insurance package is not for only one insurance, we have GLICO, Vanguard, Enterprise, GN Bank [and others]…how can all of them be a sponsor of one political party,?” he quizzed.
