Retired Lieutenant Colonel, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, has said Ghana’s ongoing strategy to prevent violent extremism and terrorism appears airtight but it is crucial for groups like chiefs and the youth, to play a part.
2. Medical & Dental Council probes extortion, negligence claim against doctor at 37 Military Hospital
The medical doctor at the centre of an allegation of medical negligence at the 37 Military Hospital, Col Dr GAO Appiah, is currently facing an ongoing probe by the Medical & Dental Council.
Col Dr Appiah is being accused of a series of professional breaches that caused, in no small measure, the death of Solomon Asare Kumah.
3. Unregulated housing sector making prices of land, properties expensive --GREDA
The Ghana Real Estate Developers Association, GREDA has expressed worry about the state of the unregulated housing sector which has triggered high pricing of lands and properties.
According to its Executive Secretary, Samuel Amegayibor, this has created challenges with respect to acquisition and ownership of properties, adding, many properties sold today in the country do not go through valuation.
4. 2021 WASSCE leakage claims by EduWATCH false – WAEC
The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has denied reports of the leakage of the Food and Nutrition examination which was written last Friday, August 30, 2021.
The Executive Director of the African Education Watch (EduWATCH) Kofi Asare claimed on social media that it had taken steps to notify WAEC of the leak noting “We reported to West African Examinations Council (WAEC) at 11:10 AM, and can now confirm it is indeed a genuine leak. The paper is just starting at the Centresâ€.
5. IMF provides US$1bn in SDR to shore up foreign exchange reserves
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will, today, August 23, 2021, make resources equivalent to US$1 billion available to Ghana, in the form of a Special Drawing Rights (SDR) allocation.
Launched for all countries to respond to the worst peacetime global recession since the great depression, the SDR allocation follows the emergency financing disbursement, also of US$1 billion, under the Rapid Credit Facility approved by the Fund 18 months ago to help in the fight against the global pandemic.
6. Gold booms amid COVID-19 pandemic
The global gold industry, and by extension the mining industry, so far stands out as the utmost beneficiary of the COVID-19 global crisis, General Secretary of Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU), Abdul-Moomon Gbana has observed.
He said unlike other sectors which have been heavily hit since outbreak of the pandemic, gold since the beginning of last year has seen an unprecedented break-through in its price – as it soared above two thousand US dollars an ounce (US$2,000/oz) toward the tail-end of last year, and has maintained relative stability since the beginning of this year.
7. Thankful Abuga Pele meets former constituents after presidential pardon
Former MP for Chiana-Paga Constituency in the Upper East Region, Abuga Pele, has met some of his former constituents at Nakolo after he was granted a presidential pardon.
The former Coordinator of defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) was released on July 1 after Nana Akufo-Addo granted him a presidential pardon on health grounds.
8. ASEPA disappointed by CHRAJ decision to stop probing $5m bribery claim against CJ
The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has said it is disappointed by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice’s (CHRAJ) to stop investigating a $5 million bribery allegation against Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah.
CHRAJ has said it will not honour a petition by ASEPA to probe a $5 million bribery allegation made against Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah.
9.Police withhold identity of second Abesim murder suspect
Police say they are keeping the identity of a second suspect arrested in connection with the gruesome killing of three people at Alaska near Abesim in the Bono Region, a secret.
“Two suspects are in our custody, one you are aware of…the second one’s name is withheldâ€, said Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, a Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service.

The Ghana Police Service has granted organizers of the Chale Wote event who were arrested over the weekend bail.
