Coups thrive when there is misgovernance – Kufour

Former President, John Agyekum Kufuor, has condemned the wave of coups d’états threatening the subregion, but warned governments against dangerous lapses in governance.

According to him, while generally unpopular and devastating, coups thrive when the state is being badly governed.

“Try to live by your oath to the people because it is the underpinning of good governance,” he advised governments in West Africa.

The recent coup in Burkina Faso on January 24, 2022, which is the latest successful coup in the West African subregion, has renewed unease about coups returning and democracies dying in the region.

No show across university campuses despite court ruling against UTAG strike

Members of the University Teachers Association, UTAG have defied the court order for them to return to the lecture halls.

There has been no show across all university campuses in the country as the UTAG strike enters the 6th week.

The UG Chapter President for UTAG Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan explained that they are yet to receive the certified copy of the ruling to determine the next line of action.

"We are yet to get the certified copy that will give us the specific details that the court is requiring of us so categorically we can not state as we speak that we are going back to the classroom tomorrow [today]."

Minority initiates process to remove Agyeman Manu over Sputnik V fiasco

Opposition legislators have initiated a process to get Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, sacked over the Sputnik V vaccine procurement scandal last year.

The Minority MPs have on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, filed a motion for a vote of censure against the Health Minister.

In a memo to the Speaker of Parliament, the Minority said his actions were a “direct breach of the Constitution and Laws passed by this Honourable House.”

Fisheries Ministry ordered to refund ‘missing’ $17,397 to state coffers

The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) has directed the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development to refund some $17,397 or its cedi equivalent to the government chest within two weeks.

The amount was unaccounted for as they were used for foreign travels by members of the ministry but were not backed by the relevant documents.

The Chairman of the committee, Dr James Klutse Avedzi, gave the directive when a team from the ministry, led by the Minister of Fisheries, Mrs Hawa Koomson, appeared before the committee on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, in to respond to infractions cited against the ministry in the 2018 Auditor-General's report.

Judges file complaint against Sosu over 'political judges' comment

The Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG), has filed an official complaint at the General Legal Council (GLC) against Madina MP Francis Xavier Sosu over his political judges comment.

The judges said they deemed the utterances of Mr Sosu who is also a private legal practitioner as an unprovoked attack on the judiciary.

Mahama backs Minority’s fierce ‘fight for democracy' on E-Levy

Former President John Mahama has backed the strong stance taken by Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators against the E-Levy, calling the MPs’ campaign against the unpopular tax a “fight for democracy.”

Speaking to the clergy at his office in Accra on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, the former President, who is tipped to stage a comeback as President in 2024, said the opposition of the Minority Group against the proposed tax regime, which led to a brawl in Parliament, was a fight to prevent an unconstitutional decision by the Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration.

Fuel prices to go up by 30 pesewas from today

Oil Marketing Companies, OMC are expected to increase fuel prices by 30 pesewas from today February 16.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) has this week predicted fuel prices could go up by up to 30pesewas.

Court grants Abronye DC ¢100K bail

An Accra Circuit Court has granted the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwame Baffoe, popularly referred to as Abronye DC, ¢100,000 bail with two sureties.

He was granted bail on Wednesday February 16. The case has been adjourned to March 9.

Algeria to become first African country to pay unemployment benefits

Algeria's president says the government will introduce unemployment benefits for young adults as the country struggles with high rates of joblessness.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune told journalists that the payments to jobseekers aged 19 to 40 would begin in March.

The military leader of Burkina Faso who took control in a coup three weeks ago has been sworn in as transitional president.

Dressed in camouflage uniform and a red beret, Paul-Henri Damiba vowed to uphold the constitution in a small ceremony in the capital, Ouagadougou.
