The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for Parliament to reconvene on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
This session will be held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, where lawmakers will resume discussions that have been delayed for several weeks.
The decision to reconvene follows a prolonged standoff stemming from Speaker Bagbin’s recent declaration of vacant seats for Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West.
This move sparked strong opposition from the Majority caucus, which argued that the Speaker’s ruling undermined their representation in the House.
In response, the Supreme Court issued a stay on the Speaker’s decision after Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed a writ.
This temporary reinstatement of the contested seats underscored the persistent tension between the Majority and Minority factions in Parliament.
The situation intensified when the Speaker adjourned sitting after the Minority caucus occupied the Majority side of the House, leveraging their numerical advantage following the Speaker’s ruling.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday, October 30, dismissed a stay application filed by the Speaker, upholding its initial directive.
