Ghanaian hiplife musician Maradona Yeboah Adjei, also known as Guru, has been elected President of the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC).

Guru was announced the winner of the polls on Wednesday, September 19, after receiving 9455 votes. His candidature for the elections was dogged by controversy prior to the polls.

Guru filed a petition against the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) Electoral Commission following his disqualification from the presidential race.

During vetting, Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, confirmed that they were not residents of any hall, resulting in their disqualification.

In response, his legal team lodged a petition with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, seeking a review of the decision.

Additionally, an interim injunction was submitted to the judicial board, requesting a temporary halt to the electoral process until a proper hearing and ruling can be made.

Following the hearing, on September 15, 2024, the appeals board overturned the disqualification with a 7-0 vote.

In its decision, the board stated that Guru and his running mate’s names should be added to the list of presidential candidates.
