Former President John Mahama has congratulated Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, on her election as the seventh Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
In a post on X, the NDC flagbearer expressed excitement that the Commonwealth have another distinguished female as its head after Patricia Scotland.
He urged Ayorkor Botchwey to Make Ghana and Africa proud with her leadership.
"Congratulations Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on your election as Secretary General of the Commonwealth, he wrote.
You will be joining a special group of diplomats to help make the Commonwealth and the world a better place.
I am particularly excited that after Patricia Scotland, we have another distinguished female at the head of the Commonwealth.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, was recently selected for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
The Minister was selected by the Commonwealth Heads of Government at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on October 25, 2024.

She is the first Ghanaian to assume this prominent role.
Ms Ayorkor Botchwey, in a brief message, praised Ghanaians and the Commonwealth for their trust in her.
She said she looked forward to working with all member States to build a stronger, more resilient Commonwealth.
