Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Yaw Owusu Obimpeh emerged victorious in Monday's Ashanti Regional Council of State election re-run.

He secured 49 votes, defeating Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, who polled 35 votes.

Daniel Anarfi Yamoah placed third with one vote, while one delegate failed to attend the election.

One person was arrested today following disturbances during the election.

The election had to be conducted today after a group of thugs stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to disrupt the process.

The thugs attacked electoral officers and destroyed ballot papers during the counting of the ballots. Scores of people, including journalists, were injured by the unknown thugs who invaded the polling station.

Elsewhere in the North East Region, Saaka Abuba was elected the representative for the region after a closely contested rerun.

He polled 7 out of 12 votes, defeating his closest contender, Asabigi San Malunga, who garnered 5 votes.

The rerun was necessitated after the initial election ended in a deadlock, with both main contenders securing an equal number of votes—6 each.
