Accra Sports Stadium to undergo renovation works

The Accra Sports Stadium is set to undergo major renovation works as it has been shut down.

The Stadium is one of the venues that will host the 2018 Africa Women Championship in Ghana this November.

The media stand of the Accra Sports Stadium was shut down last year April after the Ministry of Youth and Sports decided to repair cracks which were glaring and begun to cause fear of a major disaster.

The Stadium has been described as a “death trap” to fans who troop to watch football matches following the cracks and rusty nature of edifice.

The Accra Sports Stadium needs renovation

The Accra Sports Stadium will need a major facelift as it has not seen any renovation works ever since it was renovated to host the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Accra Hearts of Oak and Inter Allies who were going to use the venue as their home grounds for the upcoming Ghana Premier League will now have to relocate to a different venue.

Sources are saying that El-Wak Sports Stadium, The Asamoah Gyan Sports complex and the Legon Sports Stadium are some of the alternatives for these two sides.

Deputy Sports Minister Vincent Oppong Asamoah in answering a question about measures put in place to renovate the arena said his outfit is planning to enter into an agreement with a private company to help refurbish the Stadium having failed to raise a said GH¢12 million needed for the project.

According to Asamoah, the Ministry, having signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a private company have submitted a proposal on the public-private partnership to the Public Investment Division of the Ministry of Finance, which had been approved.

The New Patriotic Party prior to the 2016 elections promised to renovate all National stadiums and in other to promote the development of sports in Ghana.
