Argentina's hopes of qualifying for the round of 16 now hangs in the balance as his side were beaten 3-0 by Croatia in Russia 2018.
The Argentines who needed the win badly were outplayed by a determined Croatian side.
After both teams having chances each in the first half, none was able to break the deadlock.
It was in the second half the game burst into life in the 53rd minute.
Argentina goalkeeper Willy Caballero tried to chip a pass wide right to Mercado.
But he didn't get enough on it, simply teeing it up in mid-air for Rebic, who meets it first time with a screaming volley into the top right.
Argentina coach Sampaoli made changes and tried to chase the game but it was Croatia that scored the second.
On the 80th minute, Modric picked up possession 25 yards out. He dropped a shoulder to confuse Otamendi, shifts the ball a little to the right, and curled an unstoppable shot into the top right.
At this stage is all but all for Argentina and Croatia put the icing on the cake with a 3rd goal.
A simple tap from Rakitic set up by Kovacic in added time gave Croatia a resounding victory.

Argentina now have to hope for a Nigeria to win or draw against Iceland to still have a chance of making the round of 16.
