Lesser-known sports in the country will receive financial support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the sector Minister has announced.
Interacting with Ghana’s cycling team that recently won the international cycling championships in Ivory Coast, Mr. Asiamah said, funds would be provided to the Ghana Cycling Federation(GCF) and other sporting disciplines to develop.
Part of the sponsorship money from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation(GNPC), he said, would be allocated to the minor disciplines for their activities.
“The GNPC, last week presented to the Ministry, US$1.5 million for the development of sports in the country and part of the money would be allocated to disciplines that meet certain criteria,†he stated.
Goving some of the funds to the minor disciplines which consistently complain about lack of support from government, would be a significant step in the right direction.
The Minister added that, the disciplines, just like cycling must prove that they are serious and could do well in international competitions.
The Minister congratulated the cycling team for winning the ultimate yellow jersey at the la route de lest event in Ivory Coast.
The six-man team also emerged the best of the championship and came home with six trophies including the ultimate. They made history by winning the competition for the first time after over 19 years of participation.
Mr. Asiamah said, the nation is proud of the team for marketing and lifting the image of Ghana at the international stage and hope they would win more laurels in upcoming competitions.
