Ghanaian actor and movie producer William Asamoah Addo, Bill Asamoah has revealed that the name Kumawood was given to them by the media and not the film industry.
According to Bill Asamoah, actors of the Ghanaian language 'TWI' have nothing to do with the popular name Kumawood.
Speaking on Joy Entertainment, Bill Asamoah explained that the name came to stay after an entrepreneur decided to give more attention to the Twi movies through his film festival.
“With Kumawood, we never named ourselves Kumawood, it was the media that gave us that name, and they did so by the mere fact that a gentleman decided to honor the movies that we use the indigenous languages in acting”.
“And then his company was called Kumawood and Akuabeng, and the film festival was Kumawood and Akuabeng film festival.

“So when the maiden and second edition of the film festival came off, it was televised nationwide on GTV that is when it got popular,” Bill expatiated.
Bill Asamoah further mentioned that it was the most tangible name available at the time for Ghanaian media, but the ‘TWI’ speaking film industry had nothing to do with it.
“So right after the film festival, any movie that came out that had the ‘Twi’ dialect as the language being used, the media started calling those movies Kumawood movies. So it is not something that the film fraternity decided to name themselves, but it just that the media looking for a particular adjective or name for us and they decided to choose Kumawood,” he added.
