Twelve tricycle riders have been arrested for breaking a directing that bans such vehicles from using the motorway.

The controversial ban seeks to stop refuse-carrying tricycles from using the Accra-Tema motorway and came to force on November 1, 2021.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, who imposed the ban intends to end the hazards that these tricycles pose to other road users.

“Aside from them not having drivers’ licenses, the tricycles are not properly insured. They dump refuse anyhow in the middle of the road,” Mr Quartey said.

But on Wednesday, October 3, 2021, some 12 riders defied the directive.

Municipal Chief Executive for Ayawaso North, Mohammed Zakaria Aminu, led the task force to arrest the 12 lawbreakers.

He told Citi News that the tricycles would be impounded, and the riders sanctioned accordingly.

“We have to offload the refuse, so we are moving them to the transfer stations and dump them there, and subsequently, the tricycles will be impounded,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has described it as unlawful.

The ban is part of his ‘Making Accra Work’ agenda and is the first of a series of initiatives that will come into full force by February 2022 to bring sanity to Accra’s roads.
