Striking nurses at the Ankaful Psychiatric hospital have said they will boycott a scheduled meeting with the Health Minister today to attempt a resolution of the impasse at the Hospital.
Speaking in an interview, the spokesperson for the nurses, Emmanuel Ofori, on Friday morning held that they will not honour the invitation to meet with officials of the Ministry of Health because the meeting is being held in Accra.
According to him, the said meeting is not to approve their request but to negotiate with them again since this is not the first time they are being called to go to Accra.
Mr. Ofori on behalf of the nurses demanded the Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority rather moves to the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital to observe what is happening there.
Health minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, is expected to meet with the staff who have since February 14 this year boycotted their duties at work to drum down their demand, but they claim they will not attend the meeting arguing they expect nothing favourable from it.
Staff at the Ankaful psychiatric hospital since November 2017, have been demanding the dismissal of their Director, Dr. Eugene Dordoye over various levels of allegations.
The Medical director who was accused of corruption, human rights abuse, conflict of interest, misappropriation of the funds and resources among others, rendered a letter of apology to the staff, admitting that he went overboard in his actions.
The health minister also pleaded that the staff of the hospital grant him another chance to prove himself during a stakeholder meeting held to solve the impasse, in November. The minister also gave the CEO, a three-month ultimatum, within which the allegations leveled against him will be ascertained and if they are proven true, the CEO will be dismissed.
The staff on Wednesday, February 14 however resolved to stay away from work on the basis that their mental and physical health is at risk due to the “illegal, oppressive, traumatic, degrading, abusive, embarrassing and general egocentric behaviour of the Hospital Director, Dr. Eugene Dordoyeâ€.
