The Security Council (REGSEC) of the Upper East Region has banned pillion riding of men in the Bawku Municipality.
Per the directive issued to fight crime longstanding criminal activities in the municipality, men are barred from carrying their fellow men on the same motorcycle in the area.
Bawku has for centuries been bedevilled with tribal conflicts.
Women, per a release issued, are, however, allowed to carry fellow women only on the same motorcycle.
The REGSEC says the new directive has been enforced after a critical examination of the security situation in the municipality.
The security council recommended an increased presence of the security agencies in the township, especially, in suburbs such as the Goil and Total filling stations areas.
Bawku, a predominantly Muslim town in northeastern Ghana, has been battling ethnic conflicts for decades and remains one of Ghana’s conflict hotspots.
The area has an estimated population of 206,000 most of whom are either from the Kusasi or Manprusi ethnic groups.
