The volatile situation in Ejura is getting intense as reports from the Ashanti Region town say the military have fired into a crowd of protestors.

Two people have since died after the military shot live bullets in the crowd of missile-throwing protestors on Tuesday.

Hundreds of angry youth have been demonstrating against the gruesome assault and subsequent death of Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed, an activist affiliated with the #FixTheCountry movement and Economic Fighters League.

Four other protestors have sustained severe gunshot wounds and have been sent to the Ejura Government Hospital, trailed by a huge crowd of supporters.

A reporter for Kumasi-based Luv News has said one of the persons who sustained the gunshot wound had been escorting his team of media personnel.

The reporter, Erastus Asare Donkor, reports that military personnel who shot into the crowd were deliberate as they knelt on the ground, too aim and pushed the trigger.

“It was close range…I saw with my own eyes. they started shooting warning shots and they started shooting straight into the crowd,” he reported.

In all, six people have been rushed to the hospital in the wake of chaos: four persons who sustained gunshot wounds and two others who collapsed after live bullets killed two of their relatives.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Ejura, Mohammed Bawa Braimah, has been calling for calm on local radio stations.

Mr Braimah condemned the shooting of live bullets into the crowd and said the National Security Coordinator has informed him that a high-level delegation has been dispatched to quell the situation.

Call for justice

The hashtags #JusticeforKaaka and #WeareallKaaka have been trending on social media platforms since Monday, June 28, 2021, to demand justice for 40-year-old social media activist.

He was attacked by two unknown assailants at Ejura on Saturday, June 26, 2021, over his activism.

An amateur video that has popped up on social media show Kaaka being struck in the head repeatedly with heavy objects until he lost consciousness.

Before he was assaulted there have been numerous threats on his life and there are rife allegations that local government officials in Ejura are behind the threats and subsequent assault on Kaaka.

Many of the youth in the town have blamed police for failing to provide protection for him even though he reported the threats made on his life.

Although two persons have been picked up by the police over the death of Kaaka, social media is awash with posters and comments calling for the perpetrators of the attack on the activist to be found.
