Supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Somanya in the Eastern Region were spotted in tears as President John Mahama cut sod for the commencement of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, which will be the only public university in the Eastern Region.
According to reports from Starr News, with the worrying defeat of the NDC in the just-ended December polls in their minds, supporters were spotted weeping as the President Mahama began exchanging pleasantries with people at the ceremony grounds.Â
President Mahama during the 2012 electioneering campaign, promised citizens in the Eastern of a maiden public university in the region.
According to President Mahama, the development is to ensure equality since every region, except the Eastern, boast of a public university.
President Mahama lost his second term bid after he garnered just 44.40% of the total valid votes cast as against 53.85% of his main contender, Nana Akufo-Addo.
In what could be described as the worst performance in the history of a ruling party, majority of the NDC Members of Parliament also lost their seats.Â
