Some National Service Scheme, NSS, personnel have stormed the national head office demanding their four months unpaid allowances.

The service personnel on Tuesday, January 9 travelled from some part of the country, as far as Volta region to Accra to make known to authorities at the service how bad the allowance arrears have affected them.

Narrating their predicaments to the media, some service personnel said they've had to rely heavily on borrowing to keep up with life.

About National Service Allowance

As part of service to the nation, graduates from the various tertiary institutions are required to render one-year free service to the country. Supervise by the National Service Secretariat graduates are deployed to the various sectors of the economy.

Incentives are given to the service personnel to aid in their upkeep and also help them work effectively.

Acting Executive Director Ussif Mustapha in a statement made the insurance policy optional

NSS Allowance increment

The then NDC government before handing over power last year during the transition period increase the allowance of service personnel from  GHS 350 to GHS 559, which the new NPP administration believed was in bad faith.

The new allowance payment took effect from the 2017/2018 badge of graduates.

NSS Insurance policy

The NSS in October 2017 asked all regional directors to ensure the deduction of Ghc15.00 from the allowances of all National Service Personnel effective November 2017, as part of the implementation of the compulsory insurance package for personnel.

The Insurance scheme was to ensure that National service personnel who suffer permanent or temporary disability through accidents during the service year will be entitled to GH¢15,000 insurance cover, while GH¢3,000 will also be made available to service persons who suffer accidents that will keep them off their duties at user agencies for a month.

Scores of personnel protested the decision and signed a petition titled: “Say no to a compulsory Insurance policy,” to prevent executives of NASPA from deducting the amount.

The Service after the public condemnation of the compulsory insurance levy made it optional to the service personnel.

Agitations by NSS personnel over unpaid allowance

Four months into their service, some aggrieved personnel said their allowances have not been paid, forcing them to for the second time to storm the headquarters of the service to demand what is due them.

According to them, they will stay at the premises of the NSS until their allowances are paid.
