1. Active COVID-19 cases in Ghana now almost 6,000

The latest active coronavirus case count in Ghana is approaching 6,000 as the country’s rising infections persist. According to data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), as of July 29, the number of active cases in Ghana stands at 5,928.

2. Akufo-Addo persecuting Collins Dauda over Saglemi housing project – Sammy Gyamfi

National Communications Officer of the opposition NDC has accused the Nana Akufo-Addo government of persecuting a former appointee of the previous government, Collins Dauda, over the Saglemi housing project. Mr Dauda and four others have been charged with wilfully causing financial loss to the state over the affordable housing project.

3. Popular Nigerian chef Emeka Eloagu found dead at residence

Popular Abuja based Chef, Emeka Vincent-Eloagu, has been found dead in his residence late Sunday night, as friends and family were thrown into mourning. Before his death, the 35-year-old was a chef of repute in Abuja. He graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Paris with a Grande Diplomé in cuisine and patisserie. He created a combination of French cooking methods with Nigerian cuisine and was known to have hosted celebrities and politicians at his restaurant which he operates in the capital city.

4. UniBank case: Nii Dodoo to act as receiver pending determination of appeal   

The Court of Appeal has upheld the ruling of the High Court in the case of UniBank vrs Dr. Duffour and nine others for Nii Amanor Dodoo to act as the receiver. A unanimous judgment read by Justice Mrs Margaret Welbourne, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, said the grounds of appeal contained “arguable points of law”. The Court also ruled that UniBank, acting through the receiver as its legal representative, had demonstrated that there were “exceptional circumstances” supporting the suspension of the High Court’s ruling, including the impact the ruling could have on the entire financial sector.

5. EJF's report reveals how Chinese captains abuse Ghanaians on fishing vessels

A new report by a UK-based environment and fisheries resources management non-governmental organisation (NGO), Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), suggests that Ghanaian crew members on board fishing vessels on the country’s waters often experience frequent physical abuse from Chinese captains and officers who man such vessels. The report, titled: “Fear, Hunger and Violence” takes a detailed look at human rights and labour issues in the industrial fishing sector in Ghana. According to the report, Chinese Captains on the fishing vessels will kick or beat the crew with anything they can find—whether stick, stone, basket or boot.

6.  Collins Dauda didn’t alter Saglemi Housing agreement – Eric Opoku

The Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, has refuted claims that former Works and Housing Minister, Collins Dauda, changed aspects of the Saglemi Housing deal without recourse to Parliament. Serving as Mr. Dauda’s spokesperson on Eyewitness News, Mr. Opoku said the former minister stuck to the contract details signed by the minister before him.

7.  Tokyo 2020: Joseph Paul Amoah fails to book men’s 200m finals spot (video)

Ghanaian sprinter, Joseph Paul Amoah has missed out on a place in the finals of the men’s 200m at the Tokyo Olympics. The 24-year-old smashed the national record again, finishing with a Season’s Best time of 20.27s, placing 4th in his semi-finals heat. He crossed the line behind USA’s Erriyon Knighton, Rasheed Dwyer of Jamaica, and fellow African, Divine Oduduru from Nigeria.

8. Tokyo 2020: All fourteen Team Ghana athletes receive $4,200 each as per diem

National Sports Authority (NSA) boss Prof Peter Twumasi has revealed, all fourteen (14) athletes, coaches and officials Ghana sent to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have received their per diem at the ongoing global sports festival. According to the Director General of the NSA, each athlete received $100 as daily allowance for participating at the Olympic Games while officials and coaches received $120 each per day.

10.  Tokyo 2020: IOC launches investigation into Belarus sprinter case

The International Olympic Committee has launched a formal investigation into allegations that Belarus attempted to force an athlete to return home. "We need to establish the full facts, that can take time," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "In the meantime our first concern is for the athlete." Krystina Timanovskaya, 24, has been granted a humanitarian visa by Poland and is now at its embassy in Tokyo. She is expected to leave Japan on Wednesday, her supporters have said.
