Some residents in the Ketu South municipality of the Volta Region, affected by Sundays tidal waves are calling on government to construct a sea defense wall in the area, to prevent the annihilation of their communities.

According to the residents, a sea defense wall will safeguard communities such as Ketu, Kedzi and Blekusu from submerging in the sea.

They say though a temporary solution would be to relocate them to safer areas, government should consider as a long term measure the mechanism to defend their communities against the onslaught of the sea, in order to restore their livelihoods.

“the only thing we want from government is to come and construct a sea defense wall for us because we have no place to go.”

About 1,500 residents have been displaced in the Ketu and Keta municipalities by tidal waves that swept through fishing communities on Sunday June 9.

As a measure to find a temporary solution to the situation, the Volta Regional Minister Archibald Letsa in an interview with JoyNews said arrangements have been made with some schools in the area, for their classrooms to be used to house the residents for the mean time.
