Minister of Transport Fifi Fiavi Kwetey says government is committed in facilitating lake transport in the country.
He made the call when he monitored the dismantling of two pontoons at Senchi to be reassembled for use at Yeji and Dambai where the ferries currently in use are in a precarious state having lost an engine each.
The Minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for the Ketu South constituency noted the initial dismantling exercise was to have taken 2 weeks to complete but was effected in 6 days by Seaworld Ghana Limited.
The exercise reportedly cost 8.7 million cedis and while the dismantling went fairly well, it emerged rats had chewed certain cables which needed to be imported to enable activation of the pontoons at their new sites in Yeji and Dambai.
This development compelled the minister to entreat “citizens not to bring food items on the pontoons or consume food while on the journey to reduce rat infestation while calling for regular fumigation as well.
The two pontoons were stationed at Senchi to ferry travellers following the closure of the Adomi Bridge for repair works.
